Valentine's Day has its origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated in mid-February. The festival included the sacrifice of goats and dogs, as well as a lottery in which young men would draw the names of women from a jar. In the 4th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day, named for a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century. The day was initially celebrated as a Christian liturgical feast to honor Saint Valentine and it was not celebrated as a romantic holiday until later.
