Looking back on what prompted this event, here's a bit of history. Hallmark originally founded National Friendship Day in 1919 to celebrate friendship by sending cards to one another. It fizzled out in the 1940s, though.

However, in 1998, Winnie the Pooh was named the world's Ambassador of Friendship by the United Nations. In April 2011, the United Nations declared July 30th to be International Friendship Day, but most countries celebrate it around the first week of August.
